What does Sunday morning look like?

Sunday mornings begin at 11 am with announcements and an open prayer request time. We then lead into worshiping the Lord through song. Worship at New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church is traditional with our worship leader, pianist and organist leading us through hymns. After our time of worship, we move into hearing a word from our pastor, Felton Maughon.

Each week we look forward to hearing the great message that our pastor brings to us straight from the Word of God. We weekly find ourselves learning more about our walk of faith and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as Pastor Maughon preaches in a verse by verse format from God's Word. We believe it is foundational for the message to come from the Bible because just as Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

Church Covenant

Having been led, as we believe by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ

We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel through all nations.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale of, and use of, intoxicating drinks as a beverage; to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.

We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and Christian courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.

We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word.

Our History

A church is not a building, nor a property, it’s a body of believers uniting for the common purpose of studying the Word of God and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. In the long history of New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church, there have been trials and tribulations that have almost caused the church to close its doors, and it would have if not for the burning passion of the congregation and, more importantly, the grace of God Almighty.

Upon the completion of the Chickamauga Dam along the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a church by the name of Shepherd Hill Baptist lost its building and land due to the new boundaries of the lake caused by the dam’s construction. The church’s pastor, Clifford Ownsby, questioning the future of his church, knew not what God had planned ahead. What Pastor Ownsby did know was the flames of passion and support of his congregation was strong behind him, and he knew one thing, God wasn’t done with them yet. Over the next couple years, it is believed the congregation of Shepherd Hill Baptist met wherever it could each week, that was until a gracious Bob Monger came along.

Bob Monger, an Ooltewah-resident, saw the burning passion of a congregation, hungry to make a difference, and decided it was his duty to help. Monger set out to find a permanent location for the church, but where would it be? As Monger searched, he came across a pristine place for a church with such a name, pastureland on a hill. The owner of the land, Bob Williamson, upon discussion with Monger and Ownsby, donated part of his hillside pastureland to Shepherd Hill Baptist. Finally, a home for this church family was found. All that was left was building the church. Once more, the passion of its congregation shined through, as members began to cut down trees with Monger and supplied enough wood to build the church. After months of determination and hard work, the doors were opened to New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church in June of 1942 with the same mission they’d always had, to praise God and share the good news of Jesus Christ.

The early years of New Shepherd Hill Baptist weren’t easy, services were lit by coal oil lamps, as electricity hadn’t made it to the Ooltewah area by this point. In 1944, they had only $27.55 (about $470 today) in their treasury and had many crucial repairs ahead of them. The uncertainty of how they were going to complete all their projects was quenched once more by a determined congregation who was willing to work. Ultimately, the church not only finished its repairs but was even able to go beyond what they’d originally planned and buy a steeple, the landmark sign of a church.

In the late 1940’s, the church grew and became stronger in its community outreach, starting a bus run for services and added in the evenings. The church put its deed on the public record and continued in its mission. They continued their mission by beginning to hold communion every 1st Sunday of the month. By this time, it was no longer Pastor Clifford Ownsby, but now Pastor James Tate. Knowing what was ahead of the church with its growth, Tate began putting back $5 ($65 today) a week for a building fund.

By 1955, enough money had accumulated in the building fund, and the construction of a new church building began. Upon the completion of the church building in 1956, Reverend Roscoe Davis became the pastor of the church. Reverend Davis had the same mission in mind, praise God and spread the good news of Jesus Christ. The congregation may not have been the same as 1942, but one thing was for sure, the flames of passion for the church and its mission still existed in this congregation. With the road ahead, the church had one thing to rely on, the grace of God.

Today, with 82+ years of history behind us, New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church stands for the same mission, is led by Pastor Felton Maughon, and has a congregation with that same fire for its church and its Creator.
